Why does the heart rate indication differ from the actual heart rate when using the hand pulse sensors?

The precision of heart rate measurement through hand pulse sensors integrated into fitness equipment can be influenced by a multitude of different parameters. These include user-specific attributes such as blood circulation in the hands, hand size, and the condition of the skin surface, with skin conductivity being the primary factor.

It is noteworthy that the increasing moisture of the hand surfaces during training leads to enhanced skin conductivity, which in turn improves measurement accuracy. However, due to individually varying grip strengths and movements of the hands during the workout, hand pulse sensors do not achieve the precision of pulse measuring devices such as chest strap heart rate monitors or pulse watches, even under correct conditions, as these are firmly and directly attached to the body.

To optimize display accuracy, it is advisable during training to ensure that the pulse sensors are evenly and firmly grasped with the hands and that friction of the hands on the sensors is minimized. For an accurate and continuous display of heart rate, we recommend the use of a chest strap.
